LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Arguments against abortion bill not supported by facts

Arguments against abortion bill not supported by facts

By: Tim Rohr for Pacific Daily News

In “Copycat abortion bill is ‘dangerous, outrageous’” (Pacific Daily News, Apr. 11, 2022), Anita Arriola began her letter “It’s like clockwork: you can count on it. Virtually every election year one or more senators copy an anti-abortion bill…slap their names on it, and introduce it in the Guam Legislature.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: There is no medical justification for abortion

There is no medical justification for abortion

by: Marjorie DeBenedictis, M.D.

It disappoints me that some members of the Guam’s medical community taint the profession by supporting the deliberate killing of unborn children – in blunt language, that is what "termination of pregnancy" means. Whenever a pregnant woman presents herself to a doctor, the physician is responsible for treating two patients — and this does not include fulfilling the wish of the woman (or her male partner) to rid herself of an unwanted child.

ABORTION ON GUAM BY THE NUMBERS: 2008 - 2018

2018 was when the last abortion clinic closed. No doctor on Guam has been willing to perform abortions since then.

WHY THE PRO-ABORTS KEEP WINNING

When it comes to abortion, the pro-abortion side usually attempts to cast the anti-abortion position as "religious." It then moves to discard the anti-abortion position under the false banner of "separation of church and state." See: "The Wall of Separation" at TheMassNeverEnds.com

There is no such banner but it has become a mantra that works for "them." So the pro-aborts use it. And since most of the well-intentioned people on the anti-abortion side don't know how to respond, they revert to religious arguments such as "sanctity of life, etc."

It never works, which is why half a century later, we are still arguing about Roe while babies are being slaughtered - even with the help of our tax dollars - by the millions.

The challenge is NOT with the pro-aborts. The real challenge is with the argument from the "christian" side.

The sad fact is that almost every "church" which bears the label "christian" or the name of "Christ" permits abortion under certain circumstances.

As an example, consider this statement on the morality of abortion from the "American Baptists" -  perhaps the most conservative of all Christian denominations in the United States.

Read the statement in full here otherwise here is the key "doctrine:"

We also recognize that we are divided as to the proper witness of the church to the state regarding abortion. Many of our membership seek legal safeguards to protect unborn life. Many others advocate for and support family planning legislation, including legalized abortion as in the best interest of women in particular and society in general. Again, we have many points of view between these two positions. Consequently, we acknowledge the freedom of each individual to advocate for a public policy on abortion that reflects his or her beliefs.

In other words: "It's up to you" - whether or not it's moral to kill an innocent, helpless, defenseless human being.

Compare the Baptist statement to the hard doctrine of the Catholic Church (even though few pastors are courageous enough to still teach it):

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law..."

In other words, pursuant to Catholic teaching, there is NEVER an exception and Catholics DO NOT get to make up their own "policy on abortion that reflects his or her beliefs." You are in or you're out. (And sadly, as polls demonstrate, many "Catholics" are OUT. See Pew Research: "Like U.S. adults overall, the majority of U.S. Catholics say abortion should be legal – at least in some cases."

There is nothing surprising about this. All non-Catholic "christian" traditions can trace their foundations to Martin Luther, who protested (thus "Protestantism") against the abuses of the Catholic Church hierarchy at the time. And while Luther was correct about those abuses, Luther did not work to resolve them.

Rather, Luther worked to create a new hierarchy of which he was the head, thus opening the door to create new "heads" for anyone who disagreed with anyone, and thus propagated tens of thousands of "christian" churches, of whose leadership essentially makes it up as they go along; and, as in the present case, fundamentally have no way to define doctrine other than to turn everything over to personal interpretation supposedly guided by the "holy spirit" - since that is exactly what "they" did.

So the pro-aborts win.

For now.

Our recommendation, i.e. The Esperansa Project, and especially given the confused leadership of even the Catholic Church, is to stay away from religious "leadership" altogether, and to fight for the rights of the unborn on a purely natural-law level:

The "thing" in the womb of the mother is alive. It is growing. The "thing" is not an ear of corn, an elephant, or a fetal horse. The "thing" is a human being. And the essential question is:

When is it okay with you for one human to kill another?

THE REAL REASONS FOR ABORTION

Anti-abortion advocates will continue to lose ground against the likes of Cuomo et al. (with the help of many Catholic clerics) until they (we) begin aiming at and exposing the real reasons for abortion.

The reason is because most anti-abortion advocates have made a mantra out of "adoption," e.g. "ADOPTION NOT ABORTION."

The mantra is based on the false belief that most abortion are pro-cured by young, uneducated girls in trouble. The data simply does not bear that out.

Most abortions are procured by women educated and old enough and to know better. Guam's most recent abortion data (2017) is reflective of the country at large. Most women (not girls) are college educated and in their mid-20's to 30's:

With the pervasive availability of birth control and the age and education of most women who procure abortions, what could possibly explain these demographics?

There are three reasons:

The failure rate of birth control and abortion as the ultimate birth control

The most common form of birth control is the male condom. According to the FDA, the failure rate of the condom is: "Out of 100 women whose partners’ use this method, 18 may get pregnant." That's a one in six chance. That's like holding a revolver to your head with one loaded chamber and pulling the trigger. So what happens when a woman gets pregnant and thought she was "protected?" Abortion, the ultimate birth control.

The failure rate of the male condom is so high that their packaging should contain a warning from the FDA (like cigarettes). But given the blind penchant to distribute condoms as the answer to both unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, it is easy to see why we now have more of both.

Thus, to be truly anti-abortion, one must also oppose birth control, and the fact is, most anti-abortion advocates are probably on it themselves. So that's not going to happen. Married people on birth control will probably give themselves a pass, however, married or not, if you are using birth control then you DON'T want a child. So what happens when you get pregnant?

Infidelity

Whether married or not, women in this age range are usually in some sort of "committed" relationship. And the stats on "cheating" correspond fairly closely to abortion age demographics.

Of course, those who cheat on their spouses or significant others are even more conscious of preventing pregnancy and are more likely to depend on birth control, including abortion as the ultimate way to hide their "cheating" when birth control fails, just as the FDA says it will.

Forced abortion

Abortion and sex trafficking go hand in hand. And we are only now really waking up to the magnitude of sex trafficking even in America. And the failure rate of birth control makes it imperative that abortion services be readily available. But forced abortions are not limited to sex trafficking. While pro-abortion women chant about their rights, the real beneficiaries of their efforts are evil men who use and abuse girls and women of all ages:

Why abortion is the Un-choice:

  • 64% of women reported feeling pressured to abort.
  • Most felt rushed or uncertain, yet 67% weren’t counseled.
  • 79% weren’t told of available resources.
  • 84% weren’t sufficiently informed before abortion.
  • Pressure to abort can escalate to violence.
  • Homicide is the leading killer of pregnant women.
  • Clinics fail to screen for coercion.
  • Women nearly 4 times more likely to die after abortion.
  • Suicide rates 6 times higher after abortion.
  • 65% of women suffer trauma symptoms after abortion.

Why abortion is the Uninformed Non-Choice:

  • 54% were unsure of their decision, yet 67% received no counseling beforehand.
  • 84% were inadequately counseled beforehand.
  • 79% not told or deceived about available resources.
  • Many were misinformed by experts about fetal development, abortion alternatives or risks.
  • Many were denied essential personal, family, societal or economic support.

Why abortion is the Unsafe Choice:

  • Nearly 80% of abortions take place in non-hospital facilities, ill-equipped for emergency care.
  • 31% had health complications afterwards.
  • 65% suffer multiple symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • 65% higher risk of clinical depression.
  • 10% have immediate complications, some are life-threatening.
  • 3.5x higher risk of death from all causes.
  • Suicide rates are 6 times higher if women abort vs. giving birth.

Thus, it is obvious why adoption is not the solution for most abortion. We should still advocate for it, of course, but the real culprits are birth control, infidelity, and the abuse of women and girls made possible by the feminist agenda for so-called "reproductive rights."

GOD GAVE THEM UP...TO DISHONOR THEIR OWN BODIES AMONG THEMSELVES

BIRTH CONTROL AND ABORTION HAVE LIBERATED MEN...NOT WOMEN

The next time you hear the likes of a Lou LG or any of the other "women's health" mantra spouters, remember this scenario.

*****

I am a professional young man in his 20's. I just met this girl and she is quite attractive. We meet to have a few drinks. One thing leads to another and, well, you know. We talk a few times after that but it just doesn't seem to be working, so I don't call her back anymore.

A few weeks later she calls me at work and says we need to talk. "What for?"

"Just meet me."

I met her at Starbucks's after work and she looks like she might have been crying. After an awkward hug and a kiss, we sit down with our drinks and then blammo...

"I am pregnant."

I paused for a moment and then said, "Ok. Why tell me?"

"Well, its your baby and I thought you would want to know. After all, you are responsible."

"Whoa, hold on there. I am not responsible for anything. This was your choice."

"It takes two, or don't you remember?"

"Sorry, but this is only your healthcare issue."

"It's not a healthcare issue, it's a baby!"

"Oh no it's not. It's a healthcare issue and not my problem. You have access to government mandated and subsidized free birth control. There was no reason for this to happen. This is entirely up to you."

"You never asked me if I was on birth control. We got caught up and..."

"I am sorry you feel this way but it is not my problem. You are responsible for your own healthcare, not me. You get birth control for free, there is no impediment to you getting it. If you choose not to use it or use it incorrectly, I can't be held responsible for that. If you have a healthcare problem now, don't blame me, blame yourself."

"It's not a healthcare problem, it's not a disease, it's a baby!"

"Sorry, not according to the government. This is a preventable health condition, the cure for which you get for for free courtesy of my tax dollars. How can I possibly be held responsible for your negligence in the prevention of a freely preventable disease?"

"Stop saying that! You can't do this! I will sue for paternity!"

"Go ahead and try. Dozens of cases just like this have already been heard around the country in the last 2 years. In each and every case the court has found that given the government mandated and pervasive free access to birth control, men have a reasonable expectation that women are able to protect themselves from this disease. You can't punish me with a baby because of your negligence. You do remember that I am a lawyer, right?"

"You are a monster!"

"Listen. It has been real. Do me a favor, lose my number."

INTERPRETING THE REPORT - EDUCATION AND AGE

Having posted the Official Abortion Report for abortions performed on Guam in calendar year 2017, we will be taking a look over the next few posts at what the numbers mean.

One of the big myths about abortion is that it happens most with the poor and uneducated. However, as the report shows, the highest number of abortions were procured by the college educated.

Another myth is that it is mostly young or high school age girls who procure abortions. Since 2008, when Esperansa first began accessing the abortion data, the reports have consistently shown that this demographic is the least likely to procure an abortion.

LOU LEON GUERRERO PRAISES PLANNED PARENTHOOD

2018 Democratic candidate for Guam governor tells a crowd that she is "for life," while praising the nation's number one killer of children and purveyor of baby body parts. Given that both of Guam's infamous abortion clinics are now closed due to the retirement of both abortionists, it is quite possible that Lou Leon Guerrero will invite Planned Parenthood to Guam.

By "coincidence," the day after Esperansa launched this blog and posted the results of the Catholic Pro Life Committee Candidate Survey, the Archdiocese of Agana sent out a terse "reminder" (reprimand) regarding the restrictions on political activities of non-profit organizations. And because our local church's non-profit status is more important than dead babies, we are all supposed to shut up and sit down.

But make no mistake. The AOA reprimand of yesterday was NOT about protecting the church's non-profit status, but about protecting its relationship with one of its largest donors - not to mention the millions of dollars in business it does with said "donor's" bank.
